Just under an hour out of Brisbane you’ll find the hidden locale that is Mount Tamborine – providing some of the greatest memories and experiences a whole world away from the coastline you’ve just come from. Located in the iconic Scenic Rim, you’ll enjoy the drive, to then be greeted by the most picturesque setting where life is a little slower.
For tens of thousands of years Tamborine Mountain was inhabited by Aborigines, covered with subtropical rainforest, until it was opened for selection in 1875. It was at this time the first white settler, John O’Callaghan, selected a parcel of land on the Mountain, where by 1888 it was occupied with citrus and other orchards, vegetable crops, and the St Bernards Hotel. A village settlement started at this time and by 1893, a short-lived school was opened. Over the years that followed the area continued to attract more interest and opportunity to create businesses (such as the saw mill) and witnessed a growing number of holiday-makers coming to the area for its natural beauty.
It was around the 1920’s where guest houses were starting to be built to accommodate tourists, and money was spent on developing roads and public infrastructure. The area attracted a number of writers and artists who all had the same intention, to enjoy and preserve the natural landscape and marvel at its magnificence.
Today, a trip up the mountain will allow you to not only appreciate its natural beauty, but there is plenty to see and do in the region; with wineries, art galleries, bush walks, adventure tours and other family friendly attractions all nearby.
Mount Tamborine was always known as a suburb in its own right until 1997, when it merged with other former suburbs, North Tamborine and Eagle Heights, to create the larger locality of Tamborine Mountain we know of today.
A world away from the hustle and bustle of Brisbane and the Gold Coast, at the heart of Mount Tamborine is Gallery Walk. Here, you’ll find a selection of specialty boutiques and stores lining both sides of the main street, and if you visit on a designated market weekend, you’ll be able to include a stop at the Tamborine Mountain State School Markets to experience local food, art, craft, fashion and entertainment.
The entire area of Mount Tamborine is known for its stunning picturesque scenery and is a popular tourist destination for a day trip or weekend getaway. With a strong sense of community spirit, you’ll find the area packed with friendly locals and many accommodation options should you wish to explore for more than just a day.
Pack your hiking boots for a day of exploring! If you’re a keen observer of the great outdoors rather than an active physical participant, there are many other options such as hot air ballooning to take in the spectacular sights. Prefer indulging in fresh produce? The region caters for that too with plenty of local culinary options and picnic spots for a lazy afternoon with friends and family.
